He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the RCA 89th Battery as a gunner in England, Italy, Holland, and the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. For his service, he received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Holland Medal presented from the Dutch thanking and honouring Canada in 1945. After the war, he worked as a commissionaire at Base Gagetown and McGivney Base and as a meat cutter for McCloskey’s General Store in Boiestown, NB. He grew a large vegetable garden to provide food for his family. He married Alberta ‘Bertie’ Hovey in June 1933. They had 10 children; Merva, Merlin, Jackie, Roy, Lawrence, Gerry, Debbie, Mary Lou, Pheobe and Margaret. Garth and Bertie were both well respected in their community of Ludlow and Porter Cove and did a lot of volunteering. They were both born and brought up in this community and lived there until their passing. He was a member of Boiestown Branch #78 of the R.C.L. until he passed away in 1986. Garth est né à Ludlow, au N.-B., en 1915. Il s’est enrôlé dans l’armée en 1940 et a servi dans la 89e batterie de l’ARC comme artilleur en Angleterre, en Italie, en Hollande et au RoyaumeUni pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a été libéré en 1945. Pour son service, il a reçu l’Étoile de 1939-1945, l’Étoile d’Italie, l’Étoile France-Allemagne, la MCV et agrafe, la Médaille de la défense, la Médaille de guerre de 1939-1945 et la Médaille de Hollande présentée par les Pays-Bas pour remercier et honorer le Canada en 1945. Après la guerre, il a travaillé comme commissionnaire à la base de Gagetown et à la base McGivney et comme coupeur de viande pour le magasin général McCloskey à Boiestown, au N.-B. Il a cultivé un grand potager pour nourrir sa famille. Il a épousé Alberta « Bertie » Hovey en juin 1933. Ils ont eu 10 enfants : Merva, Merlin, Jackie, Roy, Lawrence, Gerry, Debbie, Mary Lou, Pheobe et Margaret. Garth et Bertie étaient tous deux très respectés dans leur communauté de Ludlow et de Porter Cove et faisaient beaucoup de bénévolat. Ils sont tous deux nés et ont grandi dans cette communauté et y ont vécu jusqu'à leur décès. Il était membre de la filiale 78 de Boiestown de la L.R.C. jusqu'à son décès en 1986.
